Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time that travel at the speed of light. They were predicted by Einstein and detected almost 100 years later using ultra-precise laser technology. Only the universe's most violent phenomena are loud enough to be detected--such as the collision of black holes, from which no light can escape.
