Between Ottomanism and Kurdish Nationalism: Construction of Kurdish National Identity

11:30 am-12:00 pm    Add
254 Barrows Hall

From the perspective of a linguistically informed discourse analysis, this talk examines the formation of Kurdish national identity narratives as portrayed in the journal Kurdistan (1898-1902) during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The talk further examines the sultan's hegemonic ideology of Islamic Ottomanism--a form of religious nationalism--and its implications today for the Kurdish people. This event is part of the conference "Digital Near Eastern Studies: Transforming the Humanities Through Technology," which takes place from 10 a.m. to noon in 254 Barrows Hall. All are welcome.
