Participation in sports is often influenced by having the right "equipment." From the occasional jogger struggling to find the most comfortable shock-absorbing shoes, to the amputee with orthotic assistance playing team basketball, to the Olympic athlete winning gold by hundredths of a second, all find materials to be essential and universal in their sporting lives. This presentation examines the principles of materials science and engineering applied to an analysis of modern sports equipment, worn, swung, thrown, ridden and driven. Come learn how materials have defined "athletic performance" over the years, and how they might bring some advantage to your game, too!
