About 252 million years ago, life on Earth came closest to its end in a mass extinction of unparalleled magnitude. Decades later, the cause of this extinction remains unclear. Now, a UC Berkeley team of paleobotanists will investigate a compelling idea of what may have triggered this wholesale collapse of ecosystems using unlikely witnesses: ancient plants.
